  • Detox
Detox Though not all rehab facilities offer “medical detoxification,” all people with an addiction to drugs or alcohol will experience intense physical and emotional changes and discomfort as their bodies react to withdrawal of the addictive substance. Many people use the term “detox” to refer to the period of time (ranging from a few days to a week) when the body is reacting to an addict’s decision to stop using.

My son was using meth for a little under a year before his dad and I sent him to Best Drug Rehab. I’m fortunate, I think that BDR is where we chose to send him. The reason we chose BDR was because it seemed different from all the other rehabs that we had researched. I wanted a place where I was either sending my son somewhere for a month to just wait out his time and I definitely didn’t what him stuck in a place for 6 months. There isn’t a set time to the program at BDR so he could have been there for 6 months if he needed it but only if he needed it. I think total he was there for 11 weeks and being able to take the time he needed without it being overwhelming was a big plus. They have staff at BDR who have dealt with their own addictions. So, when my son tried to leave 2 weeks after getting there and they talked to him to convince him to stay he was talking to people to understood exactly what he was dealing with and they were able to convince him that staying and completing his program was the right thing to do for himself. He started working harder after that. With more conviction to get it right. A week after he agreed to stay was when I noticed how much he was changing just in the way he spoke with me. He stopped saying mean things to me, stopped making snide comments, overall, he became a nicer person. When he completed the program at BDR they didn’t forget about him. He gets calls all the time asking how he is, what he’s working on, if he’s going to meetings, they find out what they can help him with and just talk to him. That, is my favorite thing about BDR. Because of how often he speaks to someone at BDR, I know that when he needs help, someone is there. I also know that if he slipped up and needed rehab again, they would see it before me and get him to help that much sooner. It’s an extra bit of security to ensure that my sons overcomes his addiction and goes on to live the life he wants.

This facility changed names recently. It used to be Best Drug Rehab and is now Great Lakes Rehab. The name is still set as Best Drug Rehab on some websites though. Same place, just a different name. It hasn’t had a different name for very long but, it was Great Lakes Rehab when I went there. I’ve been to other rehabs before but, Going to GLR for help was a completely different experience for me. A much better experience. There’s a lot that made it that way. The program I did was one I hadn’t done before. Every rehab before that was a variation of the same program, just in a different place, with different people trying to help me. Another thing is that when you go to GLR you stay there for as long as you need to. There’s one thing that makes it better though. It’s easy being there. It’s not a hardship to spend time there, I had a lot of work to do so I could stay sober when I left so it being easy to be there meant I could take time and do my program right. The staff at GLR the staff are super nice and they’re easy to work with. They didn’t ever talk down to me and always did whatever they could to make the time I spent there better. There was always some activity that they would put together for the clients just to give us something fun to do as a group. Or we would go out on the weekend and get away from the facility for a while. Everything they did there made being in rehab better and easier. It didn’t really occur to me at the time but them doing all that made staying sober easier for me when I got home. I had such a good time during my program, was always smiling and happy that when I got home I could hang out with my family or go see an old friend and I didn’t have that feeling that I was missing out on something by staying sober. Going out to eat and ordering a coke instead of a beer stopped making me feel awkward. The program I did at GLR helped just as much because it was a program that worked for me. It meshed with the way I thought and while it was a lot of hard work getting it all right, staying there for the time I needed to stay to get it right wasn’t hard. I’ve been home for 2 months now and staying sober hasn’t been hard for me. There are still things I need to do so I stay sober but it’s so much easier this time. Great Lakes Rehab is the most helpful rehab I’ve been to. I’d recommend this rehab to everyone looking to get sober and everyone looking for a place to send someone.
