The Shoulder in Spanish Fort

A low-cost Christian rehab on the eastern shoreline of Mobile Bay, The Shoulder provides outpatient recovery programs for men and women andresidential services for men only, as well as outpatient co-dependency groups for family and friends.

TREATMENT & ASSESSEMENT

The Shoulder, which takes its name from a Biblical passage, emphasizes the spiritual dimension of recovery in its Christ-centered 12-step program. Its stated aim is to restore the “broken harmony of the mind, body and spirit that exists in people with addictive problems.”

Assessment is conducted through a screening questionnaire/application and an intake session. On acceptance, men and women may enter the 12-step outpatient program. Meetings are held three days a week, and begin with prayer.

Residential treatment is available only to men, and programming takes place every weekday evening. The average stay is four months, during which residents are expected to work a 40-hour week; they must find employment within 10 days of entering the program and are responsible for getting to and from work. While job searching, residents are expected to perform therapeutic work or work in the facility’s thrift shop.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staff includes certified drug counselors and clerics of the Christian faith.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Shoulder is sited on a small campus-like setting with four buildings. Residents live in alarge, new-looking home set back from a picturesque street. Ten bedrooms, each with an adjoining bathroom, are shared by up to four men at a time; construction work currently underway will double the residential capacity. The Shoulder also recently began offering transitional housing on-site for graduates of the program.
